We have seen interesting products being made with recycled materials, but has anyone seen the latest designer handbags made from plastic rice bags?

At first thought, many of you probably cannot imagine these being popular among the chic and trendy, but young entrepreneur Danaiya Konglapamnuay has just made the rice bag handbag the next hot ticket item in Thailand.

DDG Daddy’s Girl offers a whole line of fashionable rice bag handbags.  The creative design, colors, and textures of the bags speak out to the young and bold individuals in Thailand and Bangkok’s hipsters are appreciating this fashion-forward move more than ever.

I was introduced to this brand only a few months ago by a co-worker.  I was instantly compelled to buy a handbag for myself after being mesmerized by its craftsmanship and unique design.  The rice bag material is almost unrecognizable once it is intricately woven and sewn into a designer handbag.  I’ve realized this is what draws people to the DDG Daddy’s Girl bags.

Danaiya Konglapamnuay, also known as Khun Som, has recently graduated from Thammasat University and is filled with fire and ambition to take fashion into a new direction.  She was first inspired to start her own business after receiving praise and recognition for her revolutionary handbag made from rice bag material, which she produced for her senior thesis.

The idea of using rice bags to make purses actually came from her family business (Khun Som’s family actually produces rice bags for sale). Due to its durability and practicality, Khun Som chose this “value-ignored material” as the base for her handbags.

Khun Som wants to create genuine change through the use of recycled materials.  She wants to show society that mundane materials can regain value once they are transformed into something creative, useful and attractive.  It is obvious that she also wants to make a fashion statement with her bold designs.

Khun Som has been able to launch her business through the great support of her family, especially her father.  Her father’s business, in particular, has provided Khun Som with the rice bags and manpower needed to create the bags.  In turn, she had recognized her father’s contribution by naming her handbag line DDG Daddy’s Girl.

Meanwhile, her friends have also supported her business by starting their own mini-collection of DDG Daddy’s Girl bags.

Khun Som’s DDG Daddy’s Girl bags were initially sold only via Facebook.  Today, the bags can now be found in some of Bangkok’s major department stores.  Word has it her designs are even sold at the popular hip and artsy TCDC shop in Emporium!

Turning rice bags into designer items– if this isn’t inspirational, I don’t know what is!
